No one has to tell an educator that the economy is slow and that funding is tight! That’s why it is important to make every dollar count when scheduling a program.

With her spinning wheel, or without, Shelly Tucker has delighted audiences across Texas and beyond with her “yarns” for twenty years. Her stories enthrall audiences of all ages.

Shelly’s work has been recognized by the Texas Commission on the Arts. The National Endowment for the Arts has recognized her as an American Masterpiece Touring Artist (one of 25 artists selected from Texas). She has been on the Texas Touring Artist Roster since 1997, which means that partial funding for her programs may be available to your group. For programs from December 15th-March 14th, the TCA deadline is November 1st!

Educators have used Shelly’s programs to enhance the curriculum (her storytelling programs are a natural fit with the TEKS Listening Skills). Her superb imagery is full of simile, metaphor, alliteration, and onomatopoeia. One student told her,

“You paint pictures inside my head with words!”

With her spinning wheel, Shelly ties her program to the curriculum by touching on language arts, history, fine arts, science, and math. It’s a forty-five minute program packed with all of that…AND fun! The students learn without even knowing that it’s happening.

The Programs:

Just Plain Stories:
Programs packed with stories including folk tales, fairy tales, legends, por quoi stories, ghost tales (if allowed, for older students) and more! A great way to enhance listening skills.
Program fee: from $550* for 6 thirty-minute sessions.

Tales With A “Twist”:
Shelly demonstrates the process of making hair into something to wear (work that children did in times past). This informative program is packed with humor and followed by Shelly “spinning a yarn (story).”
Program fee: from $550* for 4 forty-five-minute sessions OR from $625* for 5 forty-five-minute sessions.

Working Those Words!
Shelly uses her 20 years of experience to encourage better writing in students. Utilizing wordplay, games, and stories Shelly emphasizes the value of vocabulary to paint pictures with words. Excellent for state test preparation.
Program fee: from $550* for 3 forty-five-minute sessions OR from $300* for one session.

* Prices current as of August 2008. Travel fees are additional including mileage (at 45¢ a mile from Denton, TX) and lodging the night before the program (if necessary). Payment is expected on the date of service (unless otherwise arranged).
